A Homecoming Meal with Local Flavor

When Charles City’s FFA was asked to host a community homecoming meal, they wanted it to be more than just a gathering. They wanted it to be a celebration of local food. That’s where Healthy Harvest of North Iowa (HHNI) stepped in.

As value chain coordinators, HHNI worked behind the scenes to connect the students with farms and food hubs that could supply the meal. Pork was sourced through a local food hub, fresh veggies and potatoes came from nearby farms and community members, and the menu took shape around what could be grown right here in North Iowa.

With the ingredients in place, Ginger’s Top Shelf came on board as caterer, bringing the flavors together in a build-your-own potato bar. The star of the night was a brand-new creation: Comet BBQ Sauce—a sweet and tangy collaboration between Ginger’s and the Charles City FFA that featured local honey from a farm just miles away.

FFA students played a role in marketing and planning, learning firsthand what it takes to organize a community meal rooted in local sourcing. And for those who attended, it was a chance to taste the difference local food makes and to see how collaboration between schools, farmers, and businesses can spark something special.

We’re grateful to the farmers, students, and businesses who helped bring this vision to life. Events like this are proof that when we invest in local food, we’re not just filling plates—we’re building stronger, more connected communities.
