Butternut, Sage, and Apple Pizza
A fun twist on pizza night! This savory-and-sweet dish is full of local produce and creativity. Ingredients with an asterisk (*) are available seasonally right here in North Iowa! Click on select ingredients to find them nearby or stop by your local farmer’s market.

Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion* sliced thin
- ½ pound pizza dough
- 3 tbsp apple butter*
- 1 apple* sliced thin
- 1 cup mozzarella shredded
- ½ cup sharp cheddar shredded
- ¼ butternut* peeled and shaved into ribbons using a vegetable peeler
- 8 leaves sage* chopped
- salt + pepper
- red pepper flakes
- 2 oz blue cheese optional
- honey* for drizzling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F. Grease a baking sheet or pizza pan.
- Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until fragrant, about 8 minutes.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a ¼-inch thickness. Transfer the dough to the prepared pizza pan. Spread the apple butter in the thin layer over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Spread the apple slices and onions on the crust.

- Add the mozzarella and cheddar, then top with the butternut squash. Add the sage, and a pinch of salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add blue cheese if using.

- Bake until crust is golden and cheese has melted, about 15 minutes. Drizzle with honey and more red pepper flakes to taste.
